We introduce the Tech Tourism Cluster of Catalonia

Voxel and 24 other companies are co-founders of the first Cluster of Catalonia dedicated exclusively to technology applied to the travel sector.

After three years of preliminary work, the Tech Tourism Cluster of Catalonia is finally here. The organization promoted by the regional government of Catalonia through ACCIÓN is comprised of 24 companies, technology centers, universities and agents. In total, the cluster of member companies and agents provides jobs for 1,700 people in the travel and ITC application sector and its turnover is 254 million euros.

Who makes up the Tech Tourism Cluster?

The founding members of the Cluster are companies engaged in travel technology, consulting, reservations management and connectivity, electronic invoicing or management software for stores, among others.

The members of the new cluster are: Prestige, The Hotels Network, Voxel, Beroni Informatica, Amadeus, Vueling, CETT (Barcelona School of Tourism, Hospitality and Gastronomy of UB), Gremi Hotels de Barcelona, CoE in Tourism Innovation of Eurecat, GNA Hotel Solutions, SIRT, IQS (Institut Químic de Sarrià), Catalonia Hotels, The Net Revenue, Sekuenz, Efimatica, Persapia, James & Rita, Tourknife, Engisoft, Vivential Value, eMascaró, Diskover Catalonia and Viajes para ti.

What are the objectives of the Tech Tourism Cluster?

The objectives of the Cluster are to improve the competitiveness of companies in the travel and technology sector and promote internationalization. Also an objective of the Cluster is recruiting talent and accelerating the incorporation of new technologies. Consequently, its aim is to turn Catalonia into a benchmark in travel technology.

For Voxel, which is also a member of the Cluster board, this is an opportunity for establishing and strengthening new synergies. Also, to build a stronger network of companies in the sector with international outreach.

What is the working plan of the Tech Tourism Cluster?

Since 2019 the sector has been analyzed to understand its value chain, identify the actors and determine its main strategic challenges.

One of the most important challenges is to generate shared value by establishing a pilot program to help companies in the sector develop strategies for creating economic, social and environmental value.

Once the Cluster is established and introduced, the next few months will be spent working on tasks to connect members and generate new initiatives. As an example, one of these actions is to develop a Cluster internationalization plan that includes connections with other business groups or group participation in the London World Travel Market, which is the leading trade fair of the European travel sector.

Software Development Summit (#SDsummit) takes shape, the online event for Spain’s software developer community

The event—organized by Voxel—will take place from 2 to 5 March.

The #SDSummit Software Development Summit is an event devoted to the software developer community in Spain, and means to link professionals from different specialities to share know-how and trends through talks and round tables organized by and for developers. The event will be held free, online on 2, 3, 4 and 5 March.

The #SDSummit will feature over 30 speakers, including: Carlos Blé, Director at Lean Mind; Eduardo Ferro, Platform Engineering Manager at Clarity.ai; Vanesa Tejada, Head of Product at LATAM Airlines; Xavier Albaladejo, Agile-Lean Executive Transformation at Voxel; Pedro Santos, founder and CTO at CoKaiDo; Naiara Abaroa, Front-End Designer at TransferWise; Álvaro Salazar, VP of Engineering at Lookiero; and Katia Aresti, Senior Software Engineering at Red Hat EMEA.

An event championed by Voxel’s IT team

The idea of the #SDsummit came about within the micro community of developers at Voxel, the company specializing in the development of digital solutions for the value chain, after a year in which many face-to-face events have had to be cancelled due to health restrictions. As active partners at several developer community events, the Infrastructure, IT and Product teams at Voxel have arranged a series of sessions and round tables that will revolve around Continuous Delivery, Legacy Code, Agile, Technichal Coaching and Software Architecture, among others.

Voxel’s transformation

Voxel has carried out an intense organizational transformation process over the last 3 years, through the adoption of agile methodologies, the Scale Up model, and Sociocracy 3.0 patterns, among others, with the guidance of Adrian Perreau and Xavier Albaladejo. Throughout this process, the teams—especially the technical staff—have transformed their internal processes to enhance productivity, development and delivery times, as well as code/product quality and more.

In 2020, Voxel appointed Vicenç García-Altés as VP of Engineering to consolidate this transformation and to carry on improving customer value delivery. In addition to working for our IT professionals to carry out their activity with the greatest freedom and independence possible, one of García-Altés’s main objectives is to make the teams able to deliver value to the client as swiftly as the market requires. To do this, the team is currently focused on Observability, Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery.

“Organizing the #SDsummit is an opportunity to learn from other developers and also to share our own learning with other professionals. We really want to contribute to the growth of a community from which we have learned a lot and from which we are sure we will continue to do so,” says García-Altés.

Verne Harnish in Barcelona: The ScalingUp Workshop

Some months ago, when we met Verne Harnish, co-creator of the ScalingUp method, we decided to grab this opportunity to share this methodology and knowledge. A methodology that Voxel Group has been working on for some years. To do this, we have organised a Workshop for next April 15 at the H10 Marina Hotel in Barcelona, next to Partnos by Voxel.

Verne Harnish is an entrepreneur, consultant and NorthAmerican author and one of the fathers of the Scaling Up method, a work methodology on company growth that focuses in 4 key points: people, strategy, execution and cash. Founder and CEO of the world-renowned coaching company, Scaling Up, with more than 180 partners in six continents, Verne has helped growing exponential organisations for more than 3 decades.

This time, the guru of fast-growth companies and corporate expansion will join us for a workshop where we will have the opportunity to discover the Four Decisions that a leader must address to maximize company growth.

Furthermore, during the conference, we will also explore how Business Agility and Sociocracy can help companies make better decisions and better product development, as well as how they can become more resilient and resistant to changes.

Expert in legacy code Michael Feathers at Voxel

Last weekend, October 5 and 6, Voxel attended the Software Crafters Barcelona, an annual event to attract and connect software development professionals who share the values and principles of the Crafters’ movement, as one of the Gold Sponsors.

During the event, Voxel raffled limited spots for a workshop and a meetup with the expert in code Michael Feathers, founder and Director of R7K Research & Conveyance and author

of the book Working Effectively with Legacy Code. The winners had the chance to participate in an internal workshop at Voxel’s headquarters where Michael Feathers shared his knowledge about recovery and replacement of legacy code.

The attendees could not only learn from one of the world’s mentors in code, but also they had the opportunity to attend a meetup with Heidi Helfand, Director of Engineering Excellence at Procore Technologies, a construction management software company, and author of the book “Dynamic Reteaming: The Art and Wisdom of Changing Teams”.

During the Software Crafters, apart from participating in different talks and workshops, Pedro Santos, collaborator trainer at Voxel, facilitated a workshop called “The architecture game”, where attends could design an e-commerce solution using gamification. And, Vicenç García Altés, Technical Coach at Voxel, presented the talk “Why Serverless?”, where they discussed the Serverless technology and its application to business.

On the other hand, the meetup “Learn how to code and make architecture simpler with Michael Feathers” was held on Mediapro Barcelona where Feathers talked about unconditional code. During the talk, Feathers presented a conceptual framework for dealing with errors, conditionality and decision making at the level of code, architecture and user interface. The expert on code showed how changing the design and revisiting requirements, they can mitigate errors and build simpler and more robust architectures. This event had the support of Nutanix, experts in software-defined enterprise cloud.
