April 2025. Voxel, an Amadeus company at the forefront of technology solution development for B2B payments and specializing in e-billing in the travel sector, proposes investments in technology and the digitalization of manual processes to reduce CO2 emissions and paper consumption.

In line with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, the travel and tourism industry has the long-term objective to achieve net zero by 2050. To accomplish the industry’s sustainability targets, technology has a key role to play as does the contribution of all players on the market at all levels.

Within this context, e-invoicing allows the optimization and digitalization of processes and contributes to making the invoicing process more sustainable. This solution both dematerializes tons of paper used by administrative teams and also eliminates the processes associated with sending paper invoices.  As a result, it contributes to reducing the environmental impact of invoicing and advancing two of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) linked to climate action and life on land.

The travel industry is a highly transactional sector that generates millions of invoices every year, manual procedures and processing create inefficiencies and result in high paper consumption. According to Voxel data, a large international hotel chain can generate between 3 to 6 million invoices annually, and an international bedbank can process over 10 million invoices per year.

A study from Aalto University School of Economics1 claims that switching from paper to e-invoicing can reduce the carbon footprint of an invoice’s lifecycle by 63%. According to another study2 assessing the environmental impact of e-invoicing versus paper invoicing concludes that for every million e-invoices sent, 18.9 tons of CO2 are avoided.

“The travel industry represents an essential cornerstone for growth and economic development in the world and it is important to accelerate the adoption of sustainable modes of production and consumption that prioritize the well-being of communities and ecosystems and ensure that the experiences of visitors generate less emissions and use fewer resources” Amaia Marsà, Director of Marketing at Voxel, explains.

At Voxel, we are committed to helping mitigate the environmental impact of travel, as such we support our customers to make more sustainable choices through our solutions.
